Megan McCormick is an artist and educator from Brooklyn, New York with a BFA in Painting from Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, pursuing an MA in Art Education at Brooklyn College.
My work is about the mysterious, nostalgic, and disposable. It is based in photography - its history, how we use it, and the photograph as an object. Many of my subjects are sourced from images in my phone. I play with an image digitally until I get to something interesting, then through analog painting and printmaking processes, I manipulate it further to create imagined narratives. I omit subjects and forms to create a nagging sense of mystery. Though they are derivative of my own personal experiences, the resulting images are left to the interpretation of the viewer.
I have also closely studied windows in dark rooms to explore interactions between light, scale, and psychological space which has become the foundation for all my work. The way artificial light dances in through the frame of a window at night captures my attention. I keep returning to this subject in a body of paintings, drawings, and prints ongoing since 2017.
